Have you had anxiety for a long time? Or perhaps experience anxiety or panic attacks only during specific situations? If you have tried traditional psychotherapy before and felt that it just did not bring you much relief, EMDR is an excellent alternative.
EMDR is an evidence-based therapy that was developed in 1987 by psychologist Dr. Francine Shapiro. She discovered that simply by shifting her eyes from side-to-side while thinking about a disturbing event brought her significant relief. She built on this technique and created what is known today as Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing or EMDR for short (more info).
EMDR is an integrative therapy and differs from more traditional treatments such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy in that it focuses on desensitization and reprocessing traumatic and disturbing memories that continually resurface during the present whether conscious or unconscious (in the form of panic attacks or somatic symptoms when reminded of something disturbing).
I am fully-trained in EMDR and a member of the EMDR International Association, EMDRIA, the professional association responsible for the training, vetting and certification of EMDR trained therapists. I have used EMDR successfully to treat situations and concerns such as:
- Social Anxiety
- Panic attacks with known or unknown triggers
- Childhood traumas
- Life-threatening experiences
- First Responder secondary trauma
- Separation anxiety
- Fear of trying new things
- Fear of being in a relationship
- And others
